Walking

The Broads offer many opportunities for walking, with over 300km of footpaths through some of the area's most attractive landscapes. There are nature trails, circular walks and long distance footpaths suitable for anything from a gentle stroll to a strenuous hike.
There are two series of Broad Walks along public footpaths:
The Bure Valley walks are at Cockshoot (near Woodbastwick), Filby, Oby, Salhouse, Stokesby, Tunstall, Upton-South Walsham and West Caister.
The Waveney Valley walks are at Beccles Marshes, Bungay (the Bigod Way), Burgh Castle, Carlton Marshes, Geldeston, Gillingham and Haddiscoe.
In addition, the historic towns of Norwich, Beccles and Bungay are ideal for an afternoon stroll.

Biking

The Broads and surrounding countryside are the ideal place for cycling. Quiet roads, gentle slopes, beautiful countryside and fresh air, all combine to make cycling a real pleasure.
There are plenty of pretty villages within easy reach, with ancient churches, wind-pumps, pubs, cafes and other attractions to enjoy. You can even make it to the nearby coast, with its rolling waves, dunes and beautiful sandy beaches.
Above all, there are stunning views of the Broads, with sails gliding across marshland fields, all beneath the spectacular skies for which the area is famous.
Make the most of your visit to the Broads by hiring a bike from one of the network of eight bike hire points, mostly situated close to moorings.
At each centre you will find high quality all terrain bikes for hire at approx: £12 for a whole day. Half day and hourly rates are available on request at the hire points (prices change?).
Bikes are available for all sizes and ages, plus children's seats, helmets, locks and racks for your bags. Tandems can be found at most centres too.
Included in the hire price is a map of a long or short route starting and finishing at the centre, which will guide you around the sites and special attractions of the area.

Fishing

The Broads is a good area for fishing where bream, eel, perch, pike, rudd and tench can be found. The coarse fishing season runs from 16th June to 14th March and all that you need to fish is a current Environment Agency licence, available from post offices. There are many places where you can fish from the bank or you can hire a day boat. Fishing platforms suitable for wheelchairs can be found along the River Bure near Cockshoot Broad.

 Broads Events

Accessibility: If you have a disability please contact the particular event to check on its ability to cater for you.

A complete list of activities for the year is contained at the back of  the free Broads Authority magazine 'Broadcaster'. When published, it is obtainable from the Broads Authority or from The Forum tourist information centre, Norwich.

Note: For some events you will need to book a place, while for others you can just turn up on the day. In summer remember to take a drink, sunscreen and a sun hat. Even in hot weather the ground can still be marshy so you may need stout shoes or wellies. Also be aware that events can be cancelled for various reasons, so, telephone to check that the event is taking place before travelling a long distance.

Broads Task Programmer
Task booking: Please phone the Task Leader to book any of the above tasks, preferably on the Friday evening before the task, or by 6:30pm at the latest on Saturday. It is essential that you do book for a task, as tasks sometimes have to be changed or cancelled at short notice, and you may otherwise, find yourself alone at the site. We meet at 10am at the map reference given. If you do not have the relevant O.S. map, please phone to ask directions. If you need transport, this can usually be provided if you phone to ask for it. If you book for a task, but then cannot come, please let us know.
Task Timing: We aim to start work at 10am, and stop for lunch at 12:30. This is usually followed by a walk before we start work in the afternoon, and we finish at 4:30pm or earlier in the winter. Working for half a day does not usually present a problem, but please check with the task leader before the task.
Footwear: This will depend on the weather and ground conditions, but as many of the sites can be wet underfoot (especially in winter), it is a good idea to bring Wellington boots if you have some.
Mobile Phones. As many people now seem to have mobile phones, we have given the numbers of those task leaders with mobiles. If you have a mobile phone, and are delayed or lost on the way to a task, please contact the task leader.
Dogs. Dogs are not allowed on most nature reserves. Although they might be allowed on some work sites, we strongly recommend that dogs are not brought out on tasks, as they might be at risk from sharp tools, falling trees etc, and cause people using tools to be distracted.
