4. The Churches Conservation Trust
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1969 The Churches Conservation Trust ( formerly known as the Redundant Churches Fund ) was established by Parliament and the Church of England to preserve churches which are no longer needed for regular worship but are of historic, architectural or archaeological importance.
Whatever the condition of the church when the Trust takes over its aims are, first and foremost, to get the building and its contents into a sound condition as speedily as possible and, secondly, to make and keep it as presentable as circumstances and finances allow, so that the church may be welcoming to those who come to look around or to attend the occasional services or events that may be held there. The objective is to keep it intact for the benefit of present and future generations, for local people and visitors alike, to behold, visit and enjoy.
The Trust's churches are still consecrated and in most respects indistinguishable from those in regular use. They are scattered widely through the length and breadth of England, in town and country, and range from charmingly simple buildings in lovely settings to others of greater richness and importance: some are hard to find, all are worth the effort. If a church is not open, a notice regarding key-holders or opening arrangements will normally be found near the door; otherwise such information may be obtained direct from the Trust.
