Blickling Hall

National Trust

1.5 miles NW of Aylsham on B1354, 15 miles North of Norwich.

One of the greatest houses in East Anglia, built between 1619 and 1627 by Sir Henry Hobart. Nowhere else can be seen a better Jacobean plaster ceiling than in the Long Gallery. Also within are housed fine collections of furniture, pictures and tapestries.
    The delightful gardens and parkland surrounding the house offer many good walks, ranging from a short stroll around the lake to longer walks in the 4,777 acre estate. Coarse fishing - 16th June - 15th March.

For visitors with disabilities there is a designated parking area near to the restaurant in the East Car Park and a lift gives access to the first floor of the hall.

Felbrigg Hall

Situated: Two miles South West of Cromer on B1136 (near Felbrigg Village).

A lovely house with great personal charm dating from the 17th century, it still has much of its original 18th century furniture and pictures. The walled garden has been restored and is home to the national
collection of colchicums. Way-marked walks in woodland and parkland.

Strangers Hall

Situated: Charing Cross, Norwich

Saturdays all day 10.30am until 4.30pm

Strangers' Hall is a classic example of a wealthy Merchant's House from a by-gone era and it is one of the oldest buildings in Norwich. The house is set out in a series of rooms each demonstrating how its occupants have lived through the ages, from Tudor to Victorian times. (more info - History Page 2)

Included in the house treasures are: 
    The Tudor Great Hall, with its stone mullioned window and screen
    The fine Georgian dining room
    The stone vaulted under croft (circa 1320)
    The formal garden based on a seventeenth century design.

Site of a medieval monastery where pilgrims from all faiths stopped on their way to Walsingham. Predominantly Roman Catholic, the centre has relics believed to include a fragment from the True Cross. In the courtyard is a shrine to the Virgin Mary, in the form of a replica of the house she lived in after the resurrection. Also includes a Dickens experience which takes visitors into a maze of gas lit streets of the 1890's; East Anglian ghosts, and collections which include dolls and a display of Armstrong Siddeley cars. In the grounds are peacocks, doves an animal sanctuary and over a mile of river bank with a picnic area.

Holkham Hall

Situated: 2 miles west of Wells-next-the Sea on the main A149.

Holkham Hall is one of Britain's most majestic stately homes, situated in a deer park on the beautiful north Norfolk coast. This classic 18th century Palladian style mansion is a living treasure house of artistic and architectural history.

See the stunning grandeur of the Marble Hall, the magnificence of the state rooms and the old kitchen with its original pots and pans. The Bygones Museum is crammed with over 4,000 domestic and agricultural artefacts as diverse as Victorian Money Boxes and Vintage Cars. In the Pottery Shop you will find many splendid examples of local craftsmanship on sale.

An extensive range of plants and pots are on sale in the Holkham Nursery Gardens. Browse in the Gift Shop and Art gallery.
  In the Ancient House Tea rooms and in the Stable Restaurant enjoy home cooked food. Cruise on the lake, picnic in the park or stroll for miles on our golden beach.

Dragon Hall

Dragon Hall is an outstanding example of a fifteenth century Merchant's Hall built for the sale of cloth. It is the only Medieval trading hall known to still exist in Western Europe. The magnificent Great Hall has an outstanding crown-post roof and an intricately carved and painted dragon - a monument to medieval craftsmanship. Try your construction skills, and our interactive exhibits and search out the hidden dragons around the building. Hear the fascinating story of this unique building on our free audio guide or dress up in our colourful costumes and imagine yourself as a medieval merchant.

Wolterton and Mannington are about 2 miles apart in North Norfolk, 20 miles north of  Norwich. Cromer, Sheringham and the coast are 8 miles away. 
Wolterton park is 6 miles north of Aylsham through Erpingham village, signposted with 'brown and white' tourist signs from the 140 Norwich - Cromer road.
Mannington is signposted from Saxthorpe crossroads on the B1149 Norwich to Holt road.

Gardens

Roses, especially old fashioned varieties, feature throughout the gardens in different settings
and flower throughout the seasons.
The Heritage Rose Garden
has thousands of roses set in small gardens which reflect their period of origin from medieval to the present.
In the Twentieth Century Garden modern varieties are shown in modern settings. Recently a vegetable patch, plant house and bridge have been added.
Wildflowers are encouraged around the Lakes, which were re-landscaped in 1998 and in the 'Chapel Garden' where Victorian follies surround the ancient ruins of Mannington Church. Also there are many interesting trees and shrubs.
Mannington Gardens Shops are stocked with souvenirs and crafts, as well as plants with a good selection  of containerised roses. A link with Peter Beales Roses ensures that you can place orders

Wolterton Park

Park open every day for walks with views of the lake and Hall. 9am till dusk. Car Park £2.00.
Permanent orienteering course and children's adventure playground. Nature discovery days for children - held in school holidays. Must be pre-booked. Ages 6 - 16 years.
Wheelchair accessible lavatory.

Hall open for tours every Friday from late April, 2 till 5pm (last entry 4pm) £5.00.
Visits may be made by appointment at other times. Rooms and Grounds may be hired for weddings, receptions, entertainments, conferences etc.
    The Hall was built by Thomas Ripley in the 1720's for Horatio Walpole, politician, diplomat and younger brother of England's first Prime Minister - Sir Robert Walpole.

Country Walks

Over 20 miles of way-marked footpaths and permissive paths run around Mannington and Wolterton linking into the Weavers Way long distance footpath and Holt circular Walk. You can discover a wide variety of plants and wildlife on ancient woodland, a boardwalk for wheelchairs/pushchairs across a wet meadow as well as views of the Grade 1 listed Halls and other buildings. Dogs must be kept on a lead.

Short History

1248 - John Le Brun founded the Chapel and Hospice of St Mary's in the field.
1278 - The site was extended to include a college for secular studies. Cloisters and crypt built. Crypt still part of the present day cellar.
1404 - For almost one hundred and thirty years to this date, the Chapel was supported by the wealthy Norwich Guilds and was the centre of the celebration of the Feast of Corpus Christi.
1548 - Chapel and college surrendered to the Crown and the buildings destroyed.
1609 - "The Hobarts" who built Blickling Hall and later became the Earls of Buckinghamshire, built their town house.
1754 - Deed of Covenant signed to agree the formation and conversion of the buildings into a 'house for assemblies'.
1755 - James Burroughs and Sir Thomas Ivory carried out the conversion and designed the house - it opened in this year.
1876 - Used by Girls Public Day School (Norwich High School for Girls).
1939 until 1945 - War Office used the building as a camouflage school.
1950 - After refurbishment a leading Norwich shoe manufacturer Mr H J Sexton re-opened the house as the H J Sexton Norwich Arts Trust, stating his desire that the house should be enjoyed by the whole community.
1995 - April 12th fire destroyed the main roof and severely damaged the house. However with the help of local business and friends the Assembly House re-opened on February14th

Description

The magnificent entrance hall welcomes visitors to this splendid 18th century building

Noverre Suite - converted to a ball room by Frank Noverre a descendant of the Swiss born Noverres famously dance masters to the French Court and to Marie Antoinette in particular; used now in its original roll as a ballroom and also for conferences, functions, receptions and similar events.

The Georgian restaurant and Tea rooms - enjoy a morning coffee from 9.30am or choose a luncheon from our extensive menu from 12 noon.

Exhibitions - The Ivory and Hobart rooms are used for the exhibiting of various arts and crafts events. On a smaller scale the Gallery cabinets display work by local artists. Exhibitions are open to the public and there is no admission charge.

The Music Room - Concerts, receptions, weddings, antique fairs are just a few of the uses this superb room is put to. Some of the finest decorative plaster work in Norfolk can be seen enhancing this spectacular setting.

Oxburgh Hall - Garden and Park

A moated house built in 1482 by the Bedingfeld family. See the Tudor tower, priest hole,  King's and Queen's bedrooms, armoury, secret doors and rare needlework. Visit the restored kitchen garden, view the glorious French Parterre and enjoy a woodland walk.

House. All the main ground floor rooms are used by the Royal Family, full of their treasured ornaments, portraits and furniture, are open to the public.
Museum. Family possessions are displayed in the Museum housed in the old stable and coach houses including vehicles ranging in date from the first car owned by a British monarch, a 1900 Daimler, to a half-scale Aston Martin used by Princes William and Harry. It also includes amongst others a fire brigade, a golf buggy and 'All the King's Men', the tragic story of the Sandringham Company who perished at Gallipoli in 1915.
Events. Held in the park at a separate admission charge. Country Show and Driving Trials - June 28th & 29th, Flower Show - July 23rd, Rainbow Craft Fair - Sept 20th & 21st.

Sandringham Visitors Centre is open daily from April to October, then Wednesday  to Sunday only until Easter 2004. Consists of a air-conditioned self-service restaurant, traditional waitress-service tea-room, gift shop, plant stall, tractor and trailer tour, woodland and heath walks through 600 acres of country park, children's play areas and free car and coach parking.
Antiques in the Park: July 16th, 17th and 18th. Admissions Friday 8am to 12 noon £5, 12 noon to 5.00pm £3 and Sat or Sun 9am until 5pm £3

Memorials

2nd Air Division USAAF Memorial Library
The Forum, Norwich

The library occupies 185 metres of space with-in the Forum (a new library and information building situated in the city centre). It has a book collection of more than 4000 volumes covering a wide range of subjects.
    The Shrine Area, as befits this Library which is an official War Memorial, is designed to be a place for calm, peaceful reflection and meditation. Here is the Roll of Honour, listing all those who lost their lives in line of duty between 1942 and 1945.
    The large photograph of the American Cemetery at Madingley, where so many members of the 2nd Air Division, who lost their lives, were laid to rest, shows rows of Crosses and Stars of David reflecting the Christian and Jewish backgrounds of those who made the supreme sacrifice. The three Standards and the Banners of each Bomb Group bring colour and warmth to this otherwise tranquil area.
    Its principal feature is a mural over 28 feet (9 metres) long, depicting aspects of "The Friendly Invasion". Between 1942 and 1945, there were at any one time, around 50,000 USAAF. personnel including nearly 200 members of the Women's Army Corps, stationed within a 30 mile radius of Norwich. Approximately 3,000 servicemen lived on each of the fourteen airfield bases close to village communities.

Situated with-in the Shirehall, which dates from the early 1830's. This museum tells the story of the Royal Norfolk Regiment which was formed in 1685 and served around the world. It is an inspiring history lesson for visitors of all ages.
