The discovery of ship rivets in an
ancient burial mound in 1939, by local archaeologist Basil Brown, led to one of
the most
amazing finds in this country's history. It was the ultimate discovery, the ship
burial of an Anglo Saxon warrior king and his most treasured possessions, which
had been missed by grave robbers, lying undisturbed for over 1300 years.
The centre piece is a full size replica of the burial chamber
made of English oak, with grave goods laid out, giving a profound impression of
how important this man was. He is thought to be the great pagan king, Raedwald,
who died in about 625AD. The story comes full circle when you take a short walk
out to the burial mounds and see for yourself where the ship and the treasures
were found.
