This is the Cathedral Diocese of East Anglia, serving the counties of Norfolk,
Suffolk and Cambridgeshire along with the Unitary Authority of
Peterborough.
St John the Baptist Cathedral stands on one of the highest
points in Norwich. The building of the church commenced in 1882 and was the
inspiration of Henry Fitzalan Howard, the 15th Duke of Norfolk. He gave
£200,000 for the construction of a church offered as an act of thanksgiving for
his happy marriage to his wife, Lady Flora. She is commemorated in St Joseph's
Chapel, where each of the windows depicts one of her names. This chapel is used
for weekday Mass, morning and evening.
The architecture of the church follows the Early English
style of the 13th Century, with liberal use of deep grey Frosterly marble from
Durham.
As you look around, enjoy the beautiful stained glass windows
which are particularly fine. Particular mention should be made of the Walsingham
Chapel in the North Transept. The windows there tell the story of the foundation
of the Shrine, its destruction at the Reformation and its re-establishment in
1934.
As well as being the Cathedral, the church serves the local Parish, covering the
southern part of the City of Norwich and surrounding area.

Of the small
hamlet once described as Houghton Town, only the church and Houghton Farm remain
intact. The last two surviving cottages were demolished in 1994, the remainder
of the village is visible only as bumps in the field just to the north of the
church.
Built over the remains of a Roman building, the church has
stood here for at least 1,000 years. Evidence of a Roman settlement is suggested
by the use of Roman bricks in the structure, nearby remains of a villa and its
close proximity to Peddars Way. On the walls of the nave are many ancient
paintings with an image of the Holy Trinity on the east gable.
Providing you book first, Bob Davy is happy to guide you
around the church and share his extensive knowledge of its history. Last year
over 4,000 people visited the site. A full guided tour takes up to 2 hours. To
visit this lovingly restored part of our heritage, set in a quiet, idyllic
location on Peddars Way, call Bob on 01760 440470.

Foxley Wood is Norfolk's
largest ancient woodland and is believed to be over 6,000 years old.
Its tallest oaks have a cathedral-like majesty and create an
atmosphere of history and tradition that is felt all year round, but
the flowers, birds and butterflies make spring and summer the most
colourful times to visit. The sights and sounds of Foxley Wood make it
the ideal place to unwind.
A walk in spring will reward you with yellow
primroses, wood anenomes, violets, pink water avens and the striking
early purple orchid. Butterflies abound on sunny days in spring when
you may see colourful brimstones and swift-moving orange tips. Robins,
thrushes and blue tits create a busy scene in spring with their
territorial disputes and nest building. Hear the laughing call of the
green woodpecker or detect the greater spotted woodpecker drumming on
a dead tree.

A Garden for all Seasons. Winding paths lead you
quickly from the bustle of daily life to a place of tranquillity.
Daffodils dazzle in Spring, followed by the glorious scent of Azalea
and Rhododendron in May. Their bright coloured blooms beckon you to
the gardens around.
The walled garden known as the 'spider garden'
holds formal herbaceous borders that burst with colour during the
summer months. Leave for the woodland by way of Clematis walk.
Edging the water garden and lake are plants such
as the giant Gunnera manicata, Royal Fern and many varieties of
Hosta.
Sit awhile by the lakeside and put your cares
aside. From here you have the best view of the early 18th Century
house. (not open to the public).
The ancient oaks in the woodland walks are
complemented by several varieties of silver birch to contrast with
the Rhododendrons.
In spring the Candelabra Primulas brighten your
path, while in summer you are welcomed by the brilliant blues,
purples and pinks of the Hydrangeas flanking the drive.
