Carers? 'Short Breaks at Short Notice Service'
Norfolk County Council Social Services
Crossroads Carers 24hr helpline on 0808 8089876

Do you care for an elderly person over 65 years old  or someone aged between 18 and 65 years with a permanent physical disability? Then the Short Breaks at Short Notice Service may be able to help you on those unexpected occasions when you need to leave the person for whom you are caring. For example you may:

bullet

have to visit family or friends at short notice.

bullet

receive an unexpected invitation to a social function which makes arranging alternative support difficult.

bullet

need to just go out or get away for awhile.

Via Crossroads - Caring for Carers or Social Services approved independent agencies, we can arrange for a carers' support worker to replace you for a few hours, overnight, or over a weekend.
We can usually arrange this with just two working days' notice, and there is a maximum of five working days notice.
This service is in addition to any other care arrangements you may already have.
There are limitations to this service and this will be explained to you when you call us. To talk through your needs or to learn more about this service, call Crossroads Carers 24hr helpline on 0808 8089876

Local Groups

You don't have to go to another country to volunteer for VSO. Many people volunteer in the UK as part of VSO's Local Group Network and this provides a great opportunity to find out more about working in a placement; members will be happy to talk to you about their volunteering experiences.

Being a VSO volunteer

VSO recruits volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds to work in developing countries throughout the world. They may be community workers, civil engineers, teachers, business advisers, nurses or IT professionals, or specialists in a different field.
Most volunteers are qualified and experienced professionals who work for two years on a local salary. They share skills and knowledge with local people to ensure their work continues in the community after they have left. Volunteers are between 21 and 70 and come from Europe, North America, Kenya and the Philippines.
Volunteers are provided with basic accommodation, a local salary to cover living expenses, return flights, grants, social security, pension contributions and training.

Bullying

Bullying among boys tends to take the form of physical aggression, while amongst girls, the tactics are much more psychological and emotional. It is said that as girls enter their teenage years, they experience an increasing measure of fear and anxiety about how they are viewed by the opposite sex. Behavioural experts believe that girls may compete over their 'pretty power quotient', spurred by sexy media images. Many girls don't know how to deal with their feelings of anger and jealousy directly. Therefore, those feelings come out in indirect, punishing ways. Girls may target other girls, using tactics such as the silent treatment, dirty looks, gossip, and rumours.
